The Sanctuary: About 5,000 years ago a shrine was built here made from wooden posts. These are marked out by the stone markers. It has been rebuilt and enlarged several times during the following 1000 years, eventually to be replaced by a double stone circle and an avenue of stones leading to a new temple situated at Avebury.
The Diagram photo shows the positions of both the original wooden posts (Red) and then the later stone posts (blue). The posts which you see today are the concrete ones laid out to show you where the original ones were.
Unfortunately this does not look much when viewed close up and cannot give you a very good perspective, however it is a site that really should be viewed as it is part of the sacred landscape of the area which has been left to us by our ancestors.
The origin for the name of The Sanctuary is unknown.
