JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES

This is a religion that was started by a man named Charles Taze Russell in 1870. Russell was also their first President.  The religion originally started life as Zion’s Watch Tower Tract Society, due to it being primarily a bible study group, but in 1931 it took on the name of Jehovah’s Witnesses.  It shows from the original name why their magazine, what they use when preaching is called Watch Tower.  The people of this faith are generally considered by many to be excellent students of the bible, whether Old or New Testaments.

Their main belief is that Armageddon is about to take place, and that they will be the faith who, will reign alongside Jesus Christ after this final judgement.  There duty is perceived to be that of preaching to every household their good tidings.

Charles Taze Russell

(1852 – 1916)

Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1852, Russell showed a keen interest in the bible and would eventually become an active member of his first bible study group.  By the age of 25 he wanted to become a preacher, and believed that Jesus Christ had given his life for that of the sinners.

It was in 1879 when he decided to start his own bible group and called it Zion’s Watch Tower Tract Society, later known as Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania.  As the outbreak of war occurred Russell became convinced that the world would end in 1914, but this however did not happen.  Even after this setback, the society continued to function.  When Charles Russell eventually died, a man named Joseph Franklin Rutherford would succeed him.   Who would begin the resurrection of the Society.

Joseph Franklin Rutherford

(1869 – 1941)

It was this man Joseph Franklin Rutherford, who would change the name to Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1931.  Rutherford would also become the saviour of the society, by keeping it going, and giving it the success it shows in today’s world.  Rutherford would keep most of the converts it already had by telling them that the Kingdom of God had been founded in the heavens in 1914.  He then decided that the society should embark on a worldwide recruitment drive.

The Faith

Jehovah’s Witnesses have acquired a reputation over the years, as being kill joys.  This is because they do not celebrate festivals or occasions such as birthdays or Christmas, as they see these as pagan ways.  They also do not allow blood transfusion to members, even if their condition is life threatening.  This is because they believe it is against Gods will.  Their younger generation are also not allowed to partake in religious studies or education at school, as theirs is the only religion that they should learn.

They also disbelieve in the idea of a trinity, unlike other Christian faiths.  To these converts, their faith is the only True Faith, which they do remarkably well with the aid of their magazines Watch Tower.

Worship

Jehovah’s Witnesses do their worship at places, which are called Kingdom Halls.  The leaders of these are called Elders, as they do not have clergy.  Those who are converted to become Jehovah’s Witnesses, have to be baptised into their new faith.  They will sometimes hold mass baptisms, if there are lots of converts.

The Jehovah’s Witnesses will adhere strictly to the law of the bible.

After Word

It is worth noting that up to present day there has been two dates set aside by Jehovah’s Witnesses for Armageddon.  These dates were the years 1914 and 1975.  Even though up till now nothing has happened, but they continue to gain strength within the religious world.
