Minerva Shrine, Chester is a shrine dedicated to the Roman Goddess Minerva. The shrine itself is the only surviving shrine still in its original location. The area where the shrine is situated used to be a Roman quarry around 1900 years ago. Picture 3 shows to the right of the shrine an opening with bars. This opening is called Edgar's Cave. Not much is known about this, but it is believed that it may have been a natural opening which the Romans enlarged when the shrine was finished.
Please note it is quite hard to see the actual figure in the shrine, but it is still visible.
Picture 6 shows you a cast which was taken of the original and now resides in the Grosvenor Museum for people to view.
As you can see from all the photographs the actual shrine is set in quite a lovely spot of Chester and is an excellent site to view. We would also recommend that you visit Grosvenor Museum as well to see the cast. They also have books and leaflets, which will give you a little more information about the site.
