Tantra

Most people think of Tantra as sexually oriented only in nature. This isn’t accurate. Tantra is a form of Yoga which embodies the mind, spirit and body in a close bond.  Tantra is believed to be older than the Hindu religion and is an ancient system of spiritual philosophy and way of life. One simple translation of “tantra” is “an extension of knowledge”.

Even from the beginning Tantra has been very controversial. If you look at Yoga (a spiritual path that teaches separation from the world) and Bhoga (a spiritual path that teaches that physical pleasures can lead to enlightenment) have always been at odds with one another. This is the reason that there are so many divided opinions and misconceptions about Tantra.

Westerners are exposed to Kaula Tantra which unites Yoga and Bhoga to discover the divine through enjoying pleasures. To understand the differences between Yoga and Bhoga think of all the different religions that go under the heading “Christian”.

Kaula is the school of Tantra that includes the Maithuna ritual—sacred sexual intercourse. To the Kaula Tantrika, pleasure is not an end in itself, but a way to contact the divine.  This is called a state of Samarsa. A person in Samarsa views the world with equality-all are one. The sexual union of a couple represents the union of the god Shiva and the goddess Shakti. This union is as the mythical union of the universal forces of creation and destruction.

While other religions teach us that the physical plane is an illusion, Kuala Tantra teaches that concrete reality is a magical condition that we must use to propel ourselves to a higher state of consciousness. The Western Tantra is a blend of Kuala Tantra and new age and neo-pagan beliefs which is easier for the Westerner to assimilate than the more complex rituals of the East.

The next article will be on Sex Magick. I will explain what it is and what it does. If you have any questions feel free to e-mail me and I will be sure to include those in future articles as well as answer them before I put them in an article.
