THE THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY

The Theosophical Society is a combination of various different religious philosophies, all amassed together.  The woman, who was to be accredited for this religion, was Helena Petrovna Blavatsky.  She along with the help of an American journalist named Colonel Henry Olcott established the religion in 1875.

They were originally based in New York, but in 1882 shortly after founding the religion, they moved it to India, which is where they would stay.

The society sought to unite the “Wisdom of all past ages and religions”.  This was their prime directive, but they would also be credited with receiving revelations from “The Secret Brotherhood” (Occult Mahatmas), which were believed to live in Tibet.  These Occult Mahatmas taught that all living things contain energy, which if you knew the secrets you could use this energy in the material world and non-material world.

Helena Petrovna Blavatsky

(1831-1891)

Blavatsky was born in the Ukraine to an army Colonel in 1831.  From the age of 18 she began to spend her time travelling and learning lots of different mystic traditions worldwide.  Blavatsky was also interested in all esoteric wisdom, and spent a great deal of effort and time learning many areas in order that she could preserve the knowledge.

It was when she realised that there was not a philosophy or religion for which she would be able to find suitable for her own needs, or beliefs, that herself and Colonel Olcott began the Theosophical Society.  She spent much of her life learning all these different areas and would also have clairvoyant abilities accredited to her. Even though, just as things started to take off it was the belief in the occult masters, which would bring her crashing back to earth and discredit her.  She would be accused by people of fraud concerning, her supernatural abilities, which she believed she possessed.

Writings and Texts

Helena Blavatsky wrote many texts on numerous esoteric and religious areas.  In 1875 she would write her first, which was title “Isis Unveiled”.  Her major works though would be and in fact still are held in high esteem by this religion and occultists.  Two for which she is most famous for are “The Secret Doctrine” and “The Key to Theosophy”.  These works would include some of her thoughts on many topics i.e. reincarnation and karma.  These are very in depth writings and are of a considerable size.  (Authors note:  I would strongly advise any occultist or theosophy student to read these texts, as they are very informative and enlightening on many subjects).

Theosophy Society Today

Today’s organisation is small in comparison to many other religions, but there are not many religions or occult organisations, who can claim to have written as much textual works on such a varied area as The Theosophical Society.  They have also published lots of books on these areas worldwide.  The religion has also, undergone various changes since the day of Blavatsky, but are still a strong organisation and religion in areas of India

For occultists and people seeking esoteric knowledge these writings and texts of The Theosophical Society are much appreciated and read, due to their various topics of interest.  It was during the Organisation Presidency of Annie Beasant who brought the society to its peak around 1907.  This was a time when lots of books and pamphlets were circulated concerning their beliefs and writings.

The Theosophical Society is also accredited with influencing various modern day religions. It would also become the cornerstone, for which the modern day New Age Movement would have its foundations laid by.
